Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Dutch Invention That Shaped the Contemporary World
There are numerous candidates for the title of “world’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.
According to a new book, however, that honor should go to the mechanised timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before automated cutting, building a simple merchant vessel required approximately ten lumberjacks working over 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, the same amount of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Owing to this speedy mechanical cutter, that turned timber into planks using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could build vessels more quickly compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Dutch naval, economic and cultural dominance across Europe and the world.
The First True Industrial Machine
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues the writer, represented “humanity’s initial true factory apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. One component transformed the rotary movement to vertical motion for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed that same rotary movement into a sideway’s motion feeding the timber toward the blade. A ratchet system moved the wood ahead a measured step per cycle.
“Each element was modest by itself. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to integrate these parts so they operated in a precisely synchronized order, cutting on every descending stroke and advancing with each return motion. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of fundamental parts.”

Design a mechanism which converts circular motion to up-and-down action. You have these items only: A spinning wheel. Two pegs. Two rods. A “sleeve”, which is a tube or housing into which a single the bars can slide snugly. (Consider that it is possible to mount components on a stand, so that the parts don’t fall down.)
