The megacity Rises to Toxic Smog Post Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements

Various sections of the capital recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which represents ten times the safe threshold recommended by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1,800, representing 15 to 20 times higher than safe limits.

Fireworks Ban and Current Policy Shifts

Since 2020, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the deadly haze that engulfs the city as winter sets in.

However in recent months, the newly elected local administration petitioned the supreme court to propose a easing of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – historically doubted by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Judicial Verdict and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of environmental and health advocates, judicial authorities agreed to the request, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during limited hours throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Several recording stations throughout the city registered contamination spiking around midnight to extremely hazardous measurements recorded during Diwali in at least the past three years.

International Effects

The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also triggered a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab pointing to deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Persistent Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high levels of air contamination in Delhi have remained as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Around Diwali, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been documented to shoot up to seventy percent above the most severe levels ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Various Pollution Contributors

The problem in the city is caused by a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, construction activities, garbage fires and haze from farm burning in neighbouring areas of farming communities.

In these regions, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous haze that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as colder air sets in.

Health and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million people residing in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air results in elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for ten thousand premature deaths each year in the city.
